charango, noun:
charango

You may have heard Andean music from Bolivia and Peru. The highly distinctive, mandolin-like sound you hear in some arrangements is provided by the charango. This diminutive, ukulele-style instrument was traditionally made from an armadillo shell, though nowadays it is generally of wood. It has ten strings, tuned in pairs.
