poner, verb:
to put through; to get

Apart from being the basic word for putting something somewhere, poner has a couple of special uses in Spain. First, if you’re trying to phone somebody, the operator or receptionist may say:

Le pongo en seguida.
I’m just connecting you.

Or you might want to ask to be connected to somebody:

¿Me puede poner con Jaime López?
Can I speak to Jaime López, please.

Second, in restaurants and bars, waiters may ask:

¿Le pongo más vino?
Would you like some more wine?

Or you might want to ask for some more of something:

¿Me pone más pan, por favor?
Can I have some more bread, please?
