escuchar, verb:
to hear
In Latin America, escuchar is often used to convey the idea of hearing, in contexts where people from Spain would use oír. For instance, on the telephone:
Se escucha muy mal.
It’s a very bad connection or line.
En este momento no escucho nada.
At the moment I can’t hear anything.
