papel, noun:
documents; papers
The plural form of papel, los papeles, can refer to papers in the broad sense of ‘documents’.
De vez en cuando tenía que firmar papeles.
From time to time I had to sign papers.
Recogió los papeles y fotografías que había sobre la mesa.
She picked up the papers and photos that were on the table.
Papeles also means official papers, and even ID, so it’s a word that may come in handy when you’re travelling in Spanish-speaking countries. An official, or the police, might ask you for:
Sus papeles, por favor.
Can I see your papers please?
