to listen; to listen to

You can use escuchar on its own:

Juan escuchaba con atención.
Juan was listening attentively.

Or you can use it with an object:

Me gusta escuchar música.
I like listening to music.

Escucha el consejo de tus padres.
Listen to your parents’ advice.
