desagradar, verb:
to dislike, to find ... unpleasant
Desagradar is a kind of opposite of agradar, which we’ve already had as a Word of the Day. Desagradar works in the same way, with the thing you dislike being the subject of the sentence.
Había algo que le desagradaba.
There was something he didn’t like.
A veces es necesario, por nuestro bien, aceptar situaciones que nos desagradan.
Sometimes it’s necessary, for our own good, to accept situations we find unpleasant.
Desagradar is more formal and literary than using no gustar. As you can see in the next example, desagradar is often used with the negative, to suggest that you like something, but only to a limited extent.
Ese estilo no me desagrada en absoluto.
I don’t dislike that style at all.
