navegador, noun:
browser
The word browser already existed in English with a different meaning before it was applied to an internet browser. Spanish too took an existing word, el navegador, which previously referred to navigators and navigation, and applied it specifically to internet browsers.
el navegador líder
the leading browser
The related verb navegar is used in an internet meaning too:to (net)surf.
En alguna ocasión ha navegado por Internet.
He’s sometimes surfed the Web.
This is a metaphor based on the original meaning, to sail:
la imagen del yate real navegando por nuestras aguas
the image of the royal yacht sailing in our waters
