etapa, noun:
stage; phase

Etapa is the basic word you use to talk about the stages of anything. Notice how you use por in the first example.

Lo hicimos por etapas.
We did it in stages.

Es un proceso de varias etapas.
It’s a process with several stages.

When you’re talking about how one etapa relates to another, an alternative translation to stage is often phase:

la segunda etapa del plan
the second phase of the plan
