cocer, verb:
to cook
La cocina is the word for kitchen, and cocer is one of the things that happens in the cocina. It generally means to cook a particular food. It’s often used in the past participle.
Las zanahorias no están cocidas todavía.
The carrots aren’t cooked yet.
jamon cocido
cooked ham
Cocer is also often used in the reflexive form, cocerse:
Tarda diez minutos en cocerse.
It takes ten minutes to cook.
And it appears in a common proverbial phrase, when you want to express the idea that people are the same, despite living in different parts of the world:
En todas partes cuecen habas.
