tomar, verb:
to take

In another Spanish Word of the Day we’ve come across tomar meaning to take.

Me olvidé de tomar las pastillas.
I forgot to take the pills.

Another very basic and common way of using tomar is to refer to having something to eat or drink. So, in a bar or pub you might ask a friend:

¿Qué vas a tomar?
What are you going to have (to drink)?

But in a restaurant, when you’re looking at the menu, that phrase would mean What are you going to have (to eat)?
You might tell someone they drink too much coffee:

Tomas demasiado café.
You drink too much coffee.

Or, if you’re thinking of food, you might say:

Si tienes hambre podemos tomar algo.
If you’re hungry, we can get something to eat.
