atar, verb:
to tie; to tie up

We’ve already come across desatar, to untie.

desatar un nudo
to untie a knot

Atar is its opposite, and you can use it in many different senses of tying.

atarse los cordones
to tie up your shoelaces

Le ataron las manos a la espalda.
They tied his hands behind his back.

In its extended, metaphorical meaning, you can use it in a similar way to English.

No hay nada que me ate* a este lugar.
There’s nothing to tie me to this place.
