barba, noun:
beard

As we saw in an earlier Word of the Day, the phrase you use if someone wears a beard is llevar barba. If someone grows a beard, the verb you use is dejarse:

Se ha dejado la barba con, ¡ay!, ya más sal que pimienta.
He’s grown a beard, which is — alas — more salt than pepper.

An idiom shows how important beards once were in Spanish culture: con toda la barba, word for word ‘with your whole beard, means true or real:

Es un hincha con toda la barba.
He’s a real or true fan.
