pendiente, adjective:
outstanding, unresolved; outstanding
You use pendiente to describe a variety of things which have not been resolved. First, it often goes with asuntos, business:
Tenemos un par de asuntos pendientes.
We still have a couple of things to sort out, We still have a couple of outstanding issues.
You also often use pendiente with problema, problem:
para resolver los problemas pendientes
to resolve outstanding problems
A special phrase is asignatura pendiente, which refers to a subject you have to retake or make up:
los que tienen, como máximo, tres asignaturas pendientes para terminar la carrera
those who have a maximum of three subjects to retake to finish their degree course
