uva, noun:
grape

At New Year in Spain las uvas play a very special part, and not just because of all the wine that is drunk. At midnight people gather to listen to the twelve campanadas - chimes - of the clock in La Puerta del Sol, a famous square in the center of Madrid. The chimes are also broadcast. As the clock strikes, people eat twelve grapes, one for each campanada. This custom is known as (tomar) las uvas de la suerte or las doce uvas.
