to stay, to put up
Hospedarse ultimately comes from the Latin word hospes, meaning ‘a guest’. From hospes also comes huésped, guest, another Spanish Word of the Day. English words which come from the same Latin root include host, hospital and hospitality.
So, hospedarse means to stay as a guest somewhere:
El equipo chileno se hospedará en este hotel.
The Chilean team will stay at this hotel.
En Medellín me hospedé en casa de mis tíos.
In Medellín I put up with my aunt and uncle.
Hospedarse is generally a literary or journalistic word.
Hospedar can also be used transitively, to refer to providing accommodations for someone:
La casa servirá para dar fiestas y hospedar a sus colegas norteamericanos.
The house will be used to hold parties and to provide accommodations for his American colleagues.
