despierto, adjective:
awake; bright

The form despierto as an adjective derives from despertar and means awake.

Soñaba con ella aún cuando estaba despierto.
I dreamed of her even when I was awake.

Despierto also means bright in the sense of lively and intelligent:

Le enviaré los maestros que considere más despiertos.
I’ll send her the teachers that I think are the brightest.

Era el más despierto de todos.
He was the brightest of them all.
