suerte, noun:
luck
“Luck be a lady tonight” is a famous line from a song, and for Spanish speakers luck, la suerte, is as important as it is for English speakers. Sometimes la suerte is kind to us:
Tuvo muchísima suerte de salir del accidente.
He was incredibly lucky to survive the accident.
Sometimes it isn’t:
No ha tenido mucha suerte.
She didn’t have much luck.
These examples show the common pattern tener suerte, to be lucky, and that’s the pattern you use when you want to wish someone good luck:
¡Que tengas suerte!
Good luck!
When you or someone else has been lucky, you use suerte in an exclamation:
¡Qué suerte tengo!
How lucky I am!
