American English has borrowed many words from Spanish. Many of the borrowed words appear in cowboy language, being corruptions of Spanish words used by the original cowboys, los vaqueros (literally, cowmen).
The word lasso, the rope used by cowboys, has its roots in the Spanish word lazo. Some other cowboy words which have been borrowed from Spanish are stampede (from estampida) and rodeo (from rodear, meaning to surround).
