algodón, noun:
cotton
If you see a Spanish word beginning with the letters al-, the chances are that it was passed down from an Arabic word some time after Spain was invaded by the Arabic-speaking Moors in 711. Algodón is one of these; it means cotton. To say something is made of cotton, use de algodón.
ropa de algodón
cotton clothes
una camisa de algodón
a cotton shirt
Notice that it loses its accent in the plural.
Me puse algodones en los oídos.
I put some cotton (wool) in my ears.
