zapato, noun:
shoe

zapatos de tacón
high-heel shoes

zapatos planos
flat shoes

zapatos de piso
flat shoes

When we’re talking about clothing in English we tend to use words like ‘my’, ‘your’, ‘his’. But in Spanish these words are usually translated by the definite article, in this case el or los:

Se puso los zapatos.
She put on her shoes.

The same thing applies when you’re talking about parts of the body:

Se está lavando la cabeza.
She’s washing her hair.
