día, noun:
day
Nearly all Spanish nouns ending in the letter ‘-a’ are feminine, for example, puerta (door) and fruta (fruit).
Unfortunately, there are exceptions! The word día is one. It looks as though it should be feminine but it’s not, so make sure you use the right masculine article, el/los or uno/unos:
todos los días
every day
un día
one day
Remember too that any adjective or article describing día must be masculine:
¡Buenos días!
Good morning!
un día feriado
a public holiday
un día de éstos
one of these days
Can you think of any other nouns like this?
Answer
Some other common ones are: el idioma - language; el problema - problem; el clima - climate; el sistema - system; and el mapa - map.
