asistir, verb:
to attend, to go; to treat
Asistir is another ‘false friend’. It has two meanings which it’s worth getting to know. First, it’s a very common way of talking about attending an event, or even going to your Spanish class, especially in more formal language.
No asistió a la reunión.
He didn’t attend the meeting.
asistir a misa
to go to Mass
¿Va usted a asistir?
Are you going to go?
The second meaning is when medical staff look after patients. This use is more formal or journalistic.
Médicos y voluntarios asisten a los heridos y enfermos.
Doctors and volunteers are treating the sick and wounded.
