carpet, rug

Like many Spanish words beginning with the letters ‘al-’, the word alfombra has Arabic origins, dating back to the occupation of Spain by the Arabic-speaking Moors in 711. It can mean a carpet if it’s large or a rug if it’s smaller.

To say a fitted carpet, use the Spanish word una moqueta.
