This is similar to how the toolbar should appear in your browser when it is installed (the actual appearance of your browser may vary depending on how it is configured):

If you don't see the toolbar:

  • Click on 'View' at the top of your browser window
  • Click on the 'Toolbars' option
  • Make sure 'Dictionary.com' is checked

If you see only part of the toolbar:
You can drag it to a new location where you are able to view the whole thing. To do so:

  • Click on the vertical separator bar to the left of the Dictionary.com logo button
  • Your cursor will appear as two vertical lines with arrows pointing in opposite directions on either side
  • While holding down the mouse button, drag the toolbar to the desired location
  • If you can't move the toolbar and you are using Internet Explorer version 6.0+, you probably have the 'Lock the Toolbars' option. To change this option:
    • Under the 'View' menu in your browser, select 'toolbars'
    • The 'Lock the Toolbars' option will be checked. Click it to toggle the lock off

If you get a security warning when you try to download the toolbar:
You have probably selected a higher level of security in your browser options. The browser will warn you whenever you download anything. This is to prevent downloads from occurring without your permission. It is safe to download the Dictionary.com toolbar, so just click 'Yes' to initiate the download.

If you get an ActiveX alert when you try to download the toolbar:
You have probably selected the highest security level. You will not be able to install the toolbar unless you change your security settings (at least until the download is complete and the toolbar installed). To do so:

  1. Under the 'Tools' menu in your browser, select 'Internet Options'
  2. Click on the tab labeled 'Security'
  3. Select the Internet icon
  4. Change your security setting to 'Medium':
    • If you see a sliding bar, move it to 'Medium'
    • If you see custom setting information, click on the 'Default Level' button and then move the slider to 'Medium'
  5. Click 'OK'
